C. Ian Smith

BSc, MSc, PhD, MIM, CEng, MIFireE, MIFS

Ian Smith was trained as a metallurgist, and worked in the Research Department of British Steel Corporation on both development of new steels for use in construction and the application of fire engineering in the design of steel structures. He has worked on a number of British and International Standard Committees related to fire design and fire testing.

Since taking up employment as a consultant in 1983 his interests in fire have broadened beyond the behaviour of steel buildings to all aspects of structural fire resistance, fire growth behaviour, fire severity appraisal, performance of materials, means of escape calculations and smoke control.

He has worked on a wide number of notable major projects on an international basis to develop solutions to fire design problems.

His interests in materials since have also been utilised in the design of many constructions which have been successfully fire tested and incorporated into specific projects.

He was a founding member of the Society of Fire Safety Engineers and held the office of treasurer until it merged with the Institute of Fire Safety in 1992.
