Masson Mill

Conversion to Retail Outlet and Heritage Museum
Architect - Bernard Martin and Project Solutions
Client - Robert Aram and The Edinburgh Woolen Mill Ltd.

The Masson Mill complex consists a grade 2* range of buildings located in the beautiful Derwent valley in Derbyshire close to Matlock Bath.

FiSEC developed a fire safety strategy for converting the building into a retail outlet for The Edinburgh Woollen Mill Ltd. and a Museum of Textile Manufacture

Partly funded by English Partnerships and English Heritage the work has saved a fine example of our industrial heritage and generated jobs.

The strategy included an analysis of the means for escape, made more complicated by the three levels in the building where the occupants could escape to a ground level.

Assessments were made of the contribution of an old but functioning industrial sprinkler system and the fire performance of existing internal doors with recommendations for their improvement without detracting from their character.

Smoke calculations were used to assess the benefits of downstand screens to delay smoke spread.
